My verdict: two genuinely separate outings on one booking — the island with its audio tour, and an hour on the bay under the Golden Gate Bridge. The flexibility is better than people expect, because the two halves don’t have to happen on the same day. The terms are worse than people expect, because unlike almost everything else I review here, this one is non-refundable. Book it only when your San Francisco dates are locked.
What you get for $135
Half of it is the standard island visit: ferry, admission — a $45 entry value on its own — and the 45-minute “Doing Time” cellhouse audio, available in 11 languages including English, German and Dutch. The other half is a separate 60-minute bay cruise from Pier 39 that runs under the Golden Gate Bridge and past the Pier 39 sea lions. You exchange a voucher at the cruise operator’s box office, and the two parts can be booked for different times or even different days — island in the morning, bay at golden hour, or split across your trip.
